Web Accessibility for Developers
The Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) develops and maintains guidelines for the accessible web. There are 3 programs:
User Agent Accessibility Guidelines for browsers and such
Authoring Tool Accessibility Guidelines for development tools and such
Web Content Accessibility Guidelines for … web content.
We will be studying this last one, WCAG, now in its second version — WCAG 2.0.
The Guidelines fit into 4 principles:
Perceivable — users can experience the content
Operable — users can navigate and operate
Understandable — users can understand the content and process
Robust — remains accessible under different conditions of use
Each Guideline corresponds to a Level of Conformance: A (low) to AAA (high) based on their priority.
