IVR Accessibility -- Visual impairment

IVRs are valuable!

People who are blind or have low vision can usually navigate IVRs as easily as people without disabilities.  In fact, IVRs may be the most accessible and useful form of information retrieval and interaction for these users.

Unified messaging

IVRs can provide "cross-media notification": a voice message could notify a blind user that he or she has email.

IVRs with screen-based features

Blind and low vision users would need auditory access to any information displayed, such as visual notification of menu options.  If all information is delivered both visually and auditorially, there are no accessibility barriers.

Multiple disabilities

Many people who have a visual impairment also have a hearing loss.

Preparation, training, and end user documentation

All visual materials such as user guides and system flow charts should be available in an auditory form, braille, and large print.
