The Unichal Dixau device is an interesting strategy for helping people figure out unfamiliar vocabulary. Connect it to a computer and point it at the printed word of your choice, and it will read the definition aloud in an analog voice. Definitely less physically and cognitively taxing than thumbing through a dictionary, and probably also easier to use than some of the pen-shaped reading/defining devices that require significant dexterity to target just the right word.
